Im probably the only person on here who has the 2.7... For what it is, it’s fine.

Ooh, now I get to pester you with questions!

1. Auto or manual?

2. Is it easy to merge with?

I drive one for work a lot. It’s a bit leisurely in a smaller, lower regular cab. That’s pretty much the only thing I can knock it for. Ours at work has around 297k miles on it and has never had a single mechanical problem. And it’s been driven like it’s hated.

In that truck, probably not if you are used to something faster.

What kind of 0-60 would you estimate?

I can currently not into two-cars life and don’t want to DD one.

Also, today I saw a dually F-350 rolling coal on a semi truck clogging up the fast lane. I honestly laughed.

That said, it’s a fun truck. It’s not a corner carver, but for a truck, you can push it in the turns.

In the regular cab, non PreRunner, probably 10-11 seconds. I would say it’s middle ground between the 4Runner and the FiST, but realistically, it’s probably closer to the 4Runner.

I can’t speak to the 2.7, or the new 6, either. The 4.0 in my 2015, while I’m sure will prove reliable, isn’t the quickest thing out there.

Well, that and I’m not sure if I’d ever use it to full capacity.

I’m a fan of occasionally off roading and hooligan activities and towing every once and a while. But I don’t want to blow a lot of money on a high mileage truck and never actually get my value out of it.

That said, it’s fine. You realize that is all you really need. I’ve merged on the interstate in a much slower vehicle with relative ease.

Fair ‘nuff.

I’m just looking for a truck, that’s fun, but at the same time well balanced.

That will do the trick. It’s not fast, but it’s fun. It has a lot of old Toyota charm. Just actually reliable.

Ah, that sounds nice.

Is there much rev hang? I know with the V6, once it gets into the higher RPMs, there’s a fair amount of it.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > jkm7680

Kinja'd!!!1

It’s slow to rev and slow to come down, but I wouldn’t say it hangs. Due to the amount of miles, I try not redline it much, knowing it’s maintenance history.

If you want to off-road, DO NOT GET A DIESEL. They are tons of extra weight that literally can bog you down. There is a good reason that the Power Wagon doesn’t come with a Cummins, weight. If you want a solid daily driver, good for the occasional trail, there really isn’t any better choice than a Tacoma. Not Jeep. Wranglers to me are what Miatas are to you.

One thing to consider is it seems there are still a few bugs to work out on the new v6. I know it’s probably less likely than so that you would have issues in the v6, but the 4cyl is time tested. Even if not all that glamorous.

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly what I was thinking. The Tacoma seems the best balance, and size for what I’m looking to do.

I hate the Wrangler with a passion. Not only are they overpriced, but they’re bad at literally everything with the exception of driving offroad.... The one thing 95% of their owners never use them for.

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly my feeling for the Wrangler. And the reliability myth. They are not reliable. If something breaks everytime you leave pavement, it is not reliable. The 4.0 is okay, but not 5VZE reliable. It’s about on par with the 3VZE for reliability. Flamesuit on.

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly.

My bitch coworker has a newer one. It’s like the thing breaks on a monthly schedule. And usually when it breaks, it’s sitting at work in the parking lot. They’re not reliable in the slightest.

I’ve driven two Wranglers. One was a ‘99 and holy shit they drive like hell. It’s a bad thing when the most similar thing I’ve driven to it was a Boston Whaler.

I’ve test driven both engines. 2.7 was disappointing. I don’t think it could haul a cardboard box. Later I tried the v6 & it seemed OK.

Lol we haul a few hundred pounds in ours daily. It’s fine. It’s not a Murican V8, but it also doesn’t destroy it’s transmission like our Chevy’s either. It merges fine, it stops fine, and it doesn’t complain about it at 297k miles.

I had a 2016 with the 2.7 and traded it in. It’s a dog. Couldn’t maintain highway speeds out west here. Get the V6.
